Chapter 8: Arrival! Temporal Police

The next day, Marianne reported the situation to the residents, and with the help of the military officials, they managed to defeat the monsters, including the zombie goblin archers. However, Aersudro had to withdraw from the front lines.

"This is troublesome... Without Aersudro, we lack a frontline force," Marianne expressed her concern.

"Moreover, there is no guarantee that the monsters won't attack again," added Rudolf.

Marianne and Rudolf were troubled by the absence of Aersudro, their reliable front-line fighter. Without a front-line presence, their overall defensive capabilities would be reduced, making prolonged battles disadvantageous.

"What are you two talking about?" Ellie interrupted their conversation.

"Ellie, Aersudro is currently unable to fight. With our reduced forces, it will be challenging to battle against the monsters," Marianne explained.

"Oh, I see..." Ellie quickly brushed off their conversation and jumped into Rudolf's bag. Despite her carefree nature, she was not unintelligent.

"Well, let's put off thinking about it for now. First, let's have breakfast prepared by Farna," Marianne suggested.

"Yes, we can save some leftovers for Aersudro later," Rudolf agreed.

"Everyone, dig in! Today we have seasonal fruit salad and pork cutlets!" Farna served breakfast to the residents as usual.

"Oh? Aersudro isn't here," Farna noticed during the meal. Rudolf informed her that he was severely injured, and she nodded in understanding.

"Marianne, you eat so quickly," Farna commented.

"Hehe, I want to start my training as soon as possible," Marianne replied, displaying her prideful nature. However, deep down, she wasn't a bad person.

Farna trusted Marianne and followed her lead. "Just be careful not to eat too fast. It's not good for your health. Moderation is key."

"Understood," Marianne acknowledged.

After having breakfast, Marianne, Rudolf, and Ellie took turns nursing Aersudro while taking breaks.

"...Ugh... Alton... everyone..." Aersudro murmured, uttering his comrades' names as if in a delirium. He apologized, feeling sorry for venturing alone without considering others.

"It's because Aersudro acted alone that we ended up like this," Marianne also felt apologetic for the delay in rescuing him.

"So, what do we do now? Can the three of us stand against the upcoming enemies?" Rudolf questioned.

"We can't, that's why we're in trouble," Marianne responded.

"Should we hire more military officials? But eventually, our funds will run out. What should we do..." Ellie chimed in.

Just when the three of them were troubled, they heard the sound of weapons from a distance. They hurriedly left the cabin to investigate and found that monsters had attacked the Nagal region. Among them were numerous slime-like creatures and actual slimes.

"S-So many slimes!" Rudolf exclaimed.

"They're so cute~♪" Ellie became entranced by the cuteness of the slime-like creatures.

Marianne brought Ellie back to her senses by hitting her with the barrel of her pistol. "Save your sleep-talk for when you're asleep! Right now, we need to drive these creatures away!"

"Okay, got it!" Ellie snapped back to reality.

The battle between the swarm of slimes and the villainess’ army began.

Marianne wielded her twin pistols and unleashed a barrage of shots at the swarm of slime-like creatures.

"Light!" she exclaimed.

"O spirits of the wind, unleash an invisible impact! Wind Blast!" Ellie blessed Marianne's guns, enhancing their attack power.

Rudolf used a gust of wind to blow away troublesome slimes.

After a slime spat acid at Marianne, another one attempted to do the same, but she jumped up, landed on the slime, and delivered a powerful blow.

"Ticklish!" she exclaimed.

The slime-like creatures charged at Ellie and the others, but it didn't cause much damage. Annoyed by their resilience, Marianne sprayed her pistols, sweeping away the swarm of slime-like creatures.

"O spirits of the earth, shatter my enemies! Stone Blast!" Rudolf called upon the power of the earth spirits, hurling a mass of stones at the slimes. It dealt a fatal blow to the slimes, which were weak against magic. Rudolf felt relieved, thinking they were defeated, but… everyone’s expressions soon changed as they witnessed the slimes regenerate.

"What tenacity! It's not easy to defeat them!" Marianne exclaimed.

"My bullets don't work either..." She continued firing her gun at the slimes, but there was no sign of them falling. On the contrary, the slimes absorbed physical attacks and increased in size.

As they wondered what to do, suddenly they heard a voice chanting a spell.

"De Gaito do Iguni!"

In an instant, flames swept through and burned the slimes. Confirming that one of the slimes was incinerated, a silver-haired woman appeared and tore the remaining slimes apart with her claws. At the same time, a blond girl also appeared.

"The Temporal Police have arrived! Just kidding."

"I'm here too!"

"Who are you?"

"No time for explanations! They're coming!"

The girl poised her staff and released magical arrows to restrain the slimes. Marianne seized the opportunity, shooting through the moment the slimes momentarily faltered.

"It's over!"

Then, as the woman sliced the slimes with her claws, they scattered into pieces.

"Oh, they were surprisingly fragile," the woman who had annihilated the slimes said with a smile.

"Um... who are you all?" Ellie cautiously approached the woman and the girl.

They had such appearances and formidable combat abilities that Ellie couldn't help but think they might also be attackers. She seemed prepared for that.

"I'm Miro, from the Temporal Police."

"And I'm Yumir Herschel, also from the Temporal Police."

However, the woman and the girl spoke to Ellie in a friendly manner, which quickly eased her wariness. They appeared to be human as well, so there was no need for further caution.

"So, Miro-san and Yumir-san, why did you come here?"

"It was just a whim."

"But I think we can be useful as combat personnel."

"What about payment?"

"Neither Miro nor I will ask for any."

Marianne couldn't let this opportunity of acquiring such remarkable forces for free slip away. She immediately decided to make a contract with Miro and Yumir.

"Count me in!"

"Great, contract established! Ah, by the way, what are your names?"

"I'm Marianne Freudenstein."

"I'm Rudolf."

"I'm Ellie!"

As the three introduced themselves, Miro and Yumir bowed and said, "Nice to meet you."

And so, Marianne welcomed Miro and Yumir from the Temporal Police as new members of their team.
