Chapter 21: Territory Development
"Take that!"
Miro swung her claw to cut down obstructive trees.
Marianne pulled out weeds by hand and handed them to Yumir, which she put in her bag.
"We should make sure this land can accommodate around 50 people."
"I wonder if that many will come. Well, if we overdo it, we might face retaliation someday."
"Retaliation? Why would that happen?"
"Well, you see..."
In truth, Miro had once been "killed" by the king who had lost his castle due to a natural disaster, as a form of revenge.
As a result, nature was lost, and the kingdom perished.
"That's why I find it hard to trust humans."
"So, who exactly are you associating with humans?"
While they were talking, Marianne spotted some weeds.
Marianne pulled out the weeds in front of her and placed them in Yumir's bag.
As they walked, they reached a fork in the road.
Marianne and the others decided to go right but checked for traps, just in case.
"...There doesn't seem to be anything."
"Wait, Marianne! There's a poison gas trap here!"
"Oh, now that you mention it!"
Marianne couldn't believe that even in a place like this, the reach of monsters extended. She deactivated the poison gas trap.
"We need to do something about this place quickly."
"Yes, you're right."
As the three of them proceeded to the right, they came across another fork in the road.
The left path led to the entrance.
Marianne carefully searched and discovered a hidden path concealed by magic.
Yumir dispelled the magic, and the three of them continued along that path.
"Oh? It's dark even though it's daytime."
Despite being daytime, it was as dark as night there.
They couldn't see their surroundings without a lantern.
"Alright, I'll provide some light. Light!"
Yumir cast a simple light magic and illuminated the area.
"Now we can see our surroundings."
Relying on the light, Marianne pulled out more weeds.
Then, as she tried to cut down a tree, Miro stepped on something.
"What is this... Ah!?"
Miro hurriedly looked down at her feet and saw a corpse lying there.
"A corpse!? But what on earth is this?"
Marianne looked at the corpse that Miro had stepped on, unable to comprehend what it was. However, Miro and Yumir knew the cause of death.
"Yes, there's no mistaking it."
"This person was drained of blood and died... The one stationed here is a vampire, just like Yumir."
"A vampire!?"
Marianne couldn't believe that there were high-ranking undead beings here... She trembled, not out of fear but out of anger.
The three of them left the location of the corpse and walked along the left path.
There were two paths in this place, and in the middle, there were monsters.
It seemed that they were clearing the debris to proceed to the next path.
"Gi?"
"Gigi?"
As the monsters noticed Marianne and the others, they stopped their work and took up weapons to attack.
"They've come! Gatling Shot!"
Marianne swiftly wielded her twin pistols and fired wildly, riddling the monsters' bodies with numerous holes.
An orc Warrior swung his hammer, attempting to mow down Marianne and the others.
Marianne dodged the attacks with graceful movements, but its strength hit Miro and Yumir.
"Ugaaaah!"
"Kyaaa!"
"Uwaaa!"
The orc Warrior slammed his hammer into the ground, creating a shockwave that attacked the three of them.
"How insolent! I'll take you down first! Claw of Destruction... Take this!"
Miro brandished his claws, which transformed into shockwaves, tearing the orc Warrior to shreds.
Then, Yumir's magic hit, causing the Orc Warrior to howl and become incapacitated.
"Woooah!"
"Uwaaaah!"
The orc Warrior charged at Yumir and struck her with his hammer.
"Take this!"
Marianne fired her twin pistols wildly from behind, hindering the monster's movement and providing support for Miro and Yumir to fight.
The Orc Warrior tried to strike Miro and Yumir again with his hammer, but...
The monster was on the brink of death, unable to move anymore.
"Flames!"
"Eat this!"
And as Miro and Yumir unleashed shockwaves and fire magic, the monsters were wiped out.
"To think that there are monsters even in a place like this... Nagal region is truly a borderland, but something seems off."
"Who on earth would attack a place like this in the first place?"
"I don't know... But for now, our priority is development."
After retracing their steps, the three of them took the right path further inside.
The path was still dark, and without Yumir's light magic, they wouldn't be able to walk properly.
Upon investigation, they found weapons and armor placed inside.
Most of them were shoddy and unusable, but there might be something usable if they searched.
"I wonder if there's anything useful around here... Oh?"
As Marianne searched around, she found a magical item, a suit of armor. It was Feather Armor, a light armor made of lightweight materials resembling feathers.
"Isn't this armor perfect for you, Marianne?"
"For me, I don't really like overly ornate things... But since I've found it, why not try it on?"
Saying that, Marianne put on the Feather Armor.
When she took a step, she didn't feel the weight of the armor at all.
Marianne happily jumped around.
"Oh, my! It's so light! It feels like I'm not wearing anything at all! I actually wanted Aelusdro to wear it, but he's the tank... hehehe."
(Ah, that's so like Marianne.)
(Indeed.)
"With so many monsters around, there's no other choice. Let's call it a day for now and regroup."
As the three of them tried to return to the entrance, they were confronted by a young girl wielding a staff and a young man accompanying her.
The abnormal development of their canine teeth was visible, revealing that they were vampires.
"Ah, you're a vampire!"
"That's right. Humans have arrived... quite early.
I didn't want to resort to this so soon, but oh well."
"Resort to what...?"
"La Cali de Tenebres!"
As the girl chanted the spell, darkness enveloped the surroundings.
If Marianne and the others were to move even a little further, they would be consumed by darkness, unable to see their surroundings.
"The area is covered in darkness...!? In that case, I'll light it up again!"
"There's no need for that! Light!"
Miro manipulated the mana in the vicinity, instantly dispelling the darkness.
"What? No way, you already had a countermeasure? Wait..."
"No time for discussion! Gatling Shot!"
With those words, Marianne swiftly aimed her twin pistols and shot the vampires.
"Sneak attack, how cowardly..."
"Cowardly suits me just fine. After all, I'm the villainess. But you know what's even more cowardly? The monsters, don't you think?"
"Darn it... In that case... La Rota de Igni!"
In response to Marianne's defiance, the Vampire Mage, overcome with rage, focused the mana in the surroundings, transforming it into flaming projectiles and launched them at Yumir.
Yumir tried to dodge, but the projectiles scattered and all of them hit Yumir.
"Gaah!"
"Yumir!"
"We have to defeat them sooner rather than later... Miro, Yumir, give it your all."
"That's the plan! Do Pople de Igni..."
"Not gonna let that happen!"
"No, you won't!"
As the Vampire Mage tried to interrupt Yumir's incantation, Marianne fired warning shots from her pistol, successfully preventing the interruption.
"De Frago!"
And when Yumir finished chanting the spell, both vampires exploded and turned into ashes.
It seems that fire magic is extremely effective against undead creatures.
"Hehe... too bad! We vampires can revive even from ashes! So, even if you burn us..."
"I hope you don't revive. Holy Bullet!"
Marianne shot a holy bullet towards the ashes of the vampire, and the ashes disappeared without a trace.
"That... that's impossible..."
"You're the only one left, right? Take this!"
"Aaaaaaaah!"
Miro's fist, enveloped in light, struck the Vampire Mage and sent her flying.
The Vampire Mage couldn't react to the speed of the light-infused fist and suffered significant damage.
"Holy Bullet!"
"Kyaaaaaaaah!"
Marianne's holy bullet pierced through the Vampire Mage.
"How dare you... how dare you! De Gate La Rota..."
"Not happening."
Marianne took advantage of the Vampire Mage's momentary lapse and interrupted their incantation with warning shots.
At this point, the Vampire Mage was no longer a threat to the three of them.
"All right, leave the rest to me. Fire, light, incinerate that one!"
"No... noooooo!"
With both hands raised, Miro unleashed flames and light, completely incinerating the Vampire Mage.
"All right! It's our victory, isn't it?"
