Chapter 19: First Job
"For now, I've treated the wounds, but it seems that the pain still lingers, so he'll need to rest in bed for a while," Aelusdro said. It appeared that Ellie had healed the wounds, as her glowing hand indicated.
"But I'm really glad that Emma didn't take Shuu," Marianne remarked. She had noticed Shuu's combat abilities and was determined to make him a military officer by any means. However, Shuu adamantly refused to serve under Marianne, citing his allegiance to Hyuu. Although they managed to neutralize him, Marianne's blunder allowed him to escape to the cave, and they defeated him and brought him here before Emma could recruit him.
"It would be great if he could officially work here in the Nagal region this time..." Rudolf mused, peering at the sleeping face of Shuu with a concerned expression.
"So, let's discuss what we're going to do from now on until Shuu wakes up," Marianne declared. They decided to gather together and discuss their plans.
"First, we'll start with land development. We need houses to welcome the residents here and make this Nagal region more prosperous," Marianne proposed.
"That's right, I'm all for it! I want to make this Nagal region even more prosperous!" Yumir agreed enthusiastically.
"..." Miro nodded in agreement, but the fairy Ellie wore a displeased expression. For her, development meant disrupting nature.
"We're not going to develop excessively. To make it livable to a certain extent, some clearing will be necessary," Marianne explained, trying to alleviate Ellie's concerns.
"Well, if that's the case... But if we encounter wild animals during the development, make sure to protect yourselves," Yumir warned.
"I am not weak, you know? Rather, I should be more dependable," Marianne boasted, taking out the twin pistols from her holster and proudly spinning them. Yumir couldn't help but think, "It would be nice if that confidence had a solid foundation."
"...Mmm." After a while, Shuu woke up. His eyes lacked light, and his expression was vacant.
"So, you've awakened," Aelusdro approached the now-awake Shuu.
"Who... are you? Who are you..." he mumbled.
"What? Don't you remember?" Aelusdro asked.
"..."
Aelusdro tilted his head as Shuu showed no recognition of himself.
Rudolf placed his hand on Shuu's face and tried to read his memories.
"What did you find?"
"...Shuu hasn't forgotten. His memories... are gone," Rudolf explained.
"What do you mean, Rudolf?" Ellie asked with concern.
"Most likely due to that injury, our presence no longer exists within him," Rudolf replied solemnly.
Aelusdro and the others were briefly shocked by Rudolf's words. However, Marianne, on the contrary, wore a confident smile.
"So, that means he has completely forgotten about serving that Hyuu person too, right?" Marianne said.
"Huh... I... don't remember...?" Even when hearing Marianne's mention of "Hyuu," Shuu couldn't recall.
Since his memories related to Hyuu were also gone, Marianne was convinced that she could hire him.
"If you don't know anything about him, then how about I become your employer?" Marianne said, reaching out her hand to Shuu.
Shuu took her hand and slowly stood up.
"Well, if we're going for the villainess approach, 'master' is the most appropriate term, isn't it?"
In any case, Marianne had managed to make Shuu a military officer in the Nagal region.
"Upon closer look, your appearance is a bit dirty. I'll bring you a change of clothes. Wait here," Marianne said and fetched new clothes from the wardrobe.
"Ellie, could you cover us with a magic curtain? Here, Shuu, take this and change!"
"Yes, ma'am."
After a while, the newly dressed Shuu appeared. He was clad in black attire and wore a pitch-black hood, resembling a true ninja. By the way, the hood had an extended top part to accommodate the unique cat ears of Shuu, ensuring they were not concealed.
"It's a color that blends into the darkness. Suitable for me," Shuu remarked.
"As an assassin, this outfit won't hinder your work," Marianne replied.
"So, what should I do?" Shuu asked.
"Let's develop this remote region. We won't go overboard to avoid troubling Ellie. Now, let's go!" Marianne declared as she prepared to embark on the expedition.
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
"What's the matter?" Marianne hurriedly opened the door, and the fisherman, Foria, arrived in a flustered state.
"The Sahagins have taken control of the rivers in the Nagal region. If we liberate the rivers, the attacks should cease," Foria explained.
"Alright... Aelusdro, Shuu, Rudolf, Ellie, go and assess the situation! Come on, Shuu, it's your first assignment!" Marianne instructed.
Shuu nodded, and together with Aelusdro, Rudolf, and Ellie, they went outside to investigate. Aelusdro questioned why Marianne wasn't going with them, to which she replied, "I'm also busy with things here."
"Wow..." As the four of them observed the situation, it was evident that the quantity of fish and other aquatic life had significantly decreased. If left unaddressed, it would have a detrimental impact on the livelihood of the Nagal region. After gazing at the river for a moment, Rudolf spoke up.
"There's a cave... Most likely, that's where the Sahagins are. It seems there are streams flowing in different directions, so be careful not to slip."
"Got it, Rudolf. Foria, we'll definitely resolve this incident together," Marianne declared.
"You can count on us."
"Thank you..."
"Alright, let's go!"
"Yes."
Led by Aelusdro, the group arrived at the entrance of the cave near the river. Apparently, there were no guards stationed here. Instead, the Sahagins were keeping watch over the river.
"To be frank... They're slackers."
As the group entered the cave, they felt the coldness and high humidity, with puddles of water around them. As they proceeded a little further, the path branched off to the left and right, and water seemed to be flowing from right to left. Venturing to the right, they found that the cave sloped downwards, with a significant amount of water flowing, making it slippery.
"Stay calm... There might be traps," Shuu murmured as he scanned the surroundings and spotted a pitfall.
"! There's a pitfall here. We can avoid it by taking a detour," he alerted.
"Thanks, Shuu. If you hadn't noticed, I would have slipped and fallen," Aelusdro expressed his gratitude before returning to the cliff on the right side. They passed through the narrow passage and entered a spacious area. The floor had cracks, revealing a shining floor underneath, seemingly composed of water.
"It looks dangerous if we fall," Aelusdro commented.
"But there must be something further ahead..."
"We have to go through here to proceed," Aelusdro, Rudolf, Ellie, and Shuu decided to attempt jumping over the cracks.
"Hah!" Aelusdro effortlessly leaped over the cracks, utilizing his dark elf physical abilities. Ellie flew over the cracks with the help of her wings. Rudolf and Shuu successfully crossed the cracks using strength-enhancing magic and ropes.
"Huh? Shuu, despite being a ninja, you lack strength~" Ellie teased.
"...," Shuu retaliated by pressing a dagger against her neck. Rudolf hurriedly intervened, saying, "Shuu, please stop."
"I don't want to see our comrades quarreling and fighting each other anymore..."
"Sorry, Shuu. Let's stop because it's not fair to Aelusdro."
"...," Aelusdro, the dark elf, had witnessed his own kin engaging in deadly battles for dominance. Consequently, such scenes were only a source of pain for him. After Ellie apologized to Shuu, they decided to proceed further.
As the group proceeded further into the passage, they encountered a group of Sahagins waiting for them. Among them was a larger Sahagin, a sahagin warrior wielding an axe. Upon spotting Aelusdro and the others, the Sahagin leader spoke: "So, you've come! Those who defile the sea and plunder its fish! We shall eliminate you here and bring peace to the sea!"
"...It is you who disturb the peace. We will never forgive you," Aelusdro responded fearlessly, pointing his sword at the Sahagin with a cold expression. They were well aware that it was the Sahagins who were disrupting the harmony of the river.
"We won't let you interfere, Dark elf and your companions. Let's go, everyone!"
At the sound of the command, the accompanying Sahagins launched a coordinated attack, closing in on them.
