Chapter 12: Cooking dinner for the first time
It was already evening
"Welcome back. I'm glad you returned safely," Dyst greeted Marianne with a bow.
Marianne, "Thank you for your hard work."
"After that, the thorns disappeared. Did something happen there?" Aelusdro explained the events that had taken place in the mansion, including the presence of the witch Phonon in the tower.
"I see... So there was great evil there."
"But we saved the day. I believe her soul has been released as well," Rudolf added in his report.
Then, they heard the sound of a spinning wheel, sounding contented and satisfied.
"Rudolf, did you hear something?"
"I think it's just your imagination..."
"Well, in any case, the residents will be satisfied now," Marianne said. With the disappearance of the thorns, the residents would no longer be plagued by them. Marianne, as the lord, felt relieved about that.
"It's almost evening, so let's start preparing dinner. Aelusdro and I will make it today," Marianne said as she led Aelusdro to the kitchen. It was to test their newly learned cooking skills. Marianne flipped through a recipe book and, after contemplating, chose cream stew. The ingredients for cream stew were milk, potatoes, carrots, onions, and chicken.
"First, let's cut the carrots and chicken. I'll prepare the knife," Marianne said, taking out a knife. "Start by cutting the vegetables."
"Um..." Aelusdro grasped the knife and began cutting the prepared vegetables. His hands trembled slightly, but since he had wielded a sword before, his movements were smooth. After cutting the carrots and potatoes into small cubes, he attempted to do the same with the onion. However, when he tried to cut the onion, Aelusdro's hand stopped.
"What's wrong, Aelusdro?"
"When I cut onions, it seems tears come out, so I can't bring myself to cut them."
"For now, why don't you try using your magic to cover your eyes?" Marianne suggested. "Give it a try."
"I'll give it a shot." Aelusdro cast a spell to protect his eyes, gripped the knife again, and proceeded to cut the onion. Surprisingly, even while cutting the onion, his eyes were not irritated, and tears didn't flow out. He managed to cut the onion without any difficulty.
"Oh! No tears! This way, I can easily cut onions!"
"Then, I'll cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces," Marianne said, also taking a knife and cutting the chicken. It seemed she had never cooked before, so she struggled considerably.
"Ugh... This is difficult!"
"Um, Marianne-san? This is how you use a knife, you know?"
"You're being annoying! I'll do it properly!" Marianne stubbornly continued moving the knife. However, her movements were clumsy and rough, and Aelusdro couldn't help but find it amusing. This only made Marianne more determined to prove herself.
(Marianne... Can she really make delicious cream stew?)
"Alright, we're done with the vegetables and chicken. Now, let's heat some oil in the pot," Marianne said. After finishing cutting the vegetables and chicken, Marianne took out some oil and heated it in the pot.
"Aelusdro, put the vegetables and chicken you cut earlier into the pot!"
"Yes!" Aelusdro put the potatoes, carrots, onions, and chicken into the pot.
Marianne quickly added salt and pepper. "Now, let's sauté it! Fire!" Aelusdro cast a fire spell into the pot and sautéed the ingredients.
"This is my first time making this dish. I hope everyone will enjoy it."
"Don't forget about me," Marianne said with a pout. Aelusdro replied, "I won't," and focused on the cooking.
To ensure that the ingredients were thoroughly cooked, Aelusdro sautéed them evenly. After the onions turned transparent, Aelusdro turned off the heat.
"Alright, now we need to add milk and water. I'll handle the stirring!" Marianne poured the milk and water into the pot, and Aelusdro lit the fire again while Marianne stirred.
Her stirring was quite rough, but she put in her best effort as she wanted to create a dish. She kept stirring diligently until the mixture thickened.
"Become delicious, my cream stew!"
...
At that moment, Marianne's expression was so intense that even Aelusdro was taken aback. As the stew boiled and thickened, Marianne instructed Aelusdro to lower the heat.
In this way, the two of them simmered the cream stew until it was ready.
"May it become delicious, may it become delicious..."
"Please be delicious, please be delicious..."
And then, they heard the simmering sound. Aelusdro promptly turned off the heat.
"That's it. The cream stew is ready."
"Let's have a look inside." Marianne opened the pot, and a pleasant aroma wafted out. The appearance was appetizing, with all the ingredients mixed evenly. However, good looks alone wouldn't make it a success; it had to taste good for their first dish to be a triumph.
"It looks delicious."
"The real test is whether everyone will enjoy it."
"Hehe, there's no way a dish made by me and Aelusdro wouldn't be delicious." Marianne and Aelusdro served the cream stew onto plates.
That night.
"For tonight's dinner..."
"We made cream stew!"
"Oh, how unusual. You two made dinner today?"
Farna, who was usually on the receiving end of meals, marveled at the situation. Marianne was excited to have Farna try the dish they had made for the first time.
"...Alright, let's dig in!" Farna took a spoonful of the cream stew and smiled.
"Well, well, it's quite good. Good job, both of you."
"I, too, must learn this dish while I live here."
Before being assigned to this place, Marianne hadn't taken cooking seriously. However, in order to live here, she was determined to learn household chores. And today, together with Aelusdro, they made cream stew.
"Though I got dragged into it..."
"Did you say something?"
"N-No."
Marianne gave Aelusdro a stern look after his slip of the tongue. Dyst, who had been watching the two, started eating.
"Dyst, how does it taste?"
"Oh... It's delicious."
"I'm glad. It's wonderful to see Dyst enjoying it. He may not be able to fight, but he's a capable vice-captain."
"Thank you."
Marianne, in her own way, seemed to acknowledge Dyst.
"To think that everyone is living harmoniously like this. It was unimaginable where I came from..."
Aelusdro watched the heartwarming scene with envy. In the Underdark where they used to live, Dark elf women engaged in power struggles almost every day, while the men were used as tools for their battles. But here, everyone was living together, extending a helping hand to one another. For Aelusdro, who had spent a long time in the Underdark, this place was truly like heaven.
"...I hope this peace continues forever. That is my wish..."
