Chapter 1: I put my staff in the hole

I, a novice wizard, belonged to the Adventurer's Guild.

I spent my days fulfilling requests assigned by the guild.

"It seems like a job to infuse magic into a golem. It pays two copper coins."

Life wasn't very good.

Being at the lowest rank, Copper Rank, in the guild, I barely managed to survive, just enough to stave off hunger.

"Should I go back to the countryside..."

I knew well that things weren't going to improve this way.

I was beginning to think that returning to the village and tilling the fields might be slightly better.

And then, one day.

"Huh? Was there a hole here?"

On my way back to the town after completing a request, I noticed a large hole in the middle of the road.

When I peered into it, it was pitch black inside.

It seemed to have considerable depth.

"If I fall, I probably won't be able to come back up."

The hole seemed to extend all the way to the depths of the earth.

If I were to slip even a little, it would be a grave situation.

"Well, I'm already at the bottom anyway."

It was like I had already fallen.

Three years had passed since I became an adventurer, yet I couldn't rise above the Copper Rank. I was nothing more than a bottom-dweller.

Should I quit?

I no longer cared from the bottom of my heart.

"I don't need this anymore."

I tossed my staff into the hole.

It was a beginner's staff. Using a staff made controlling magic a little easier.

Everyone let go of it once they got used to it to some extent.

I had been keeping it, swallowing my pride, hoping it would be of some help.

At that moment...

"Did you drop this golden staff?"

A woman dressed in a white robe emerged from the hole.

She was holding a staff that gleamed in gold.

"It's floating..."

The woman was clearly not an ordinary human.

"Let me ask again. Did you drop this golden staff?"

"No, I didn't."

I instinctively answered differently.

Because the woman had a bump on her head.

It must have been a direct hit from the staff I had thrown away.

This is definitely going to get me in trouble.

"I see. So it's not this one?"

"No."

There's no other way to answer. Giving a straightforward response will surely lead to undesirable consequences.

Then, the woman made a thoughtful gesture and, this time, she presented a silver staff, seemingly materializing it from somewhere.

"Then, is it this silver staff?"

"No."

Whether it's gold or silver doesn't matter. I just don't want to get scolded.

"Then, it must be this wooden staff you dropped, right?"

"...No."

It was undoubtedly my own staff, but I decided to stick to my lie.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I am."

The woman looked extremely suspicious.

However, I couldn't admit it here.

"It won't do any good if you lie..."

Finally, the woman began to intimidate me.

For a moment, I hesitated, but I reassured myself that everything would be fine.

Because I didn't drop the staff. I threw it away!

"...To a stubborn person like you, I shall present this hole."

Saying that, the woman disappeared in a swoosh.

"What!?"

I looked around in confusion, but the woman was nowhere to be seen.

Not only that, but the hole that seemed to extend to the depths of the earth a moment ago had vanished without a trace.

"Was it a dream?"

I pinched my cheek tightly.

It hurt like crazy. It seemed to be an event that actually happened in reality.

"What's going on?"

I remained in a daze for a while, but eventually, the sun began to set.

Monsters become active during the night.

I couldn't stay here like this, so I hurried back to the town.
